At some point, a homeschooling family may decide that their child will continue their education in a public or private school. Because admission policies vary by institution, families are encouraged to become familiar with the applicable requirements before beginning the enrollment process.

Transferring to the Public School System

If your child is entering the public school system after being homeschooled and was enrolled through an umbrella school or a distance education program that issued official grades and academic records, those documents should be submitted during enrollment.

If your child was homeschooled independently without an institution issuing official transcripts, the applicable procedures are those established by the Puerto Rico Department of Education, including the required documentation and portfolio presentation guidelines.

Families should always review the most current Department of Education requirements before beginning the enrollment process.

Transferring to a Private School

Private schools establish their own admission policies. While many welcome homeschooled students, each institution has the authority to determine its admission requirements and evaluation procedures.

If you anticipate enrolling your child in a private school in the future, it is advisable to contact the school in advance to learn about its policies regarding homeschooled applicants and the documentation that may be required.

Some schools may request:

A subject-based homeschool portfolio.

Placement examinations administered by the school.

Standardized test results from external testing organizations.

Psychological or psychoeducational evaluations.

Student essays.

Questionnaires.

Parent and student interviews.

Additional supporting documentation as part of the admissions process.

Public School Equivalency Process

Requests related to homeschooled students entering Puerto Rico's public school system are currently processed through the official Puerto Rico Department of Education online platform.

The general process includes:

Access the Department of Education's official online portal.

Create a user account.

Enter the Equivalency Studies module.

Complete the evaluation request and submit the required documentation.

Important: The Equivalency Studies and Homeschooling Unit does not currently issue certifications for private schools.
